I remember wanting to attend my primary school fair just a few weeks after I was baptized. I asked my mother if I could attend the fair and she told me I should pray about it, so I did. After praying, I returned and told my mother that God said I could go, but just this once.
As a child, my perception of God answering that prayer was whatever I felt like He was saying when I prayed. These feelings were often and obviously heavily influenced by what I wanted to do.
Can you relate?
Thankfully, there is a way to take the guesswork out of what God wants for us and it is by referring to His Word.
Everything we need is written in His Word. We can find direct answers to our questions, or wisdom to help us make difficult decisions written in the pages of the Holy Bible. He has also given us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.
Let us be careful not to confuse the Holy Spirit with our desires. Whatever we think we hear from the Spirit must also be confirmed by and correlate with what is written in God's Word.
Even though our feelings are real, what we perceive to be true through our feelings is not always accurate.
My perception of God has changed a lot since those primary school days. I know that my 3 pound brain can never fathom the fullness of, or ever truly understand Who God is. Today, everything I know about God is what God says about Himself in His Word. Nothing More.
Have a blessed and beautiful WAR Wednesday.
