Unfollowing the Flesh...Jackie Hill Perry's Testimony

This weekend someone at my church shared the link for the Desperate for Jesus 2020 conference. The first speaker Jackie Hill Perry, caught my attention. Her delivery of the Word on our identity as bearers of the image of God was clear and beautifully done. Later when she gave her testimony I thought it was an important one to share this Testimony Tuesday.

Jackie recognized herself as attracted to those of the same sex around the age of 5, "before she could spell her own name." She was not exposed to it on television as this was the 90's, and didn't even have a name for describing it until she went to church.

Every Sunday Jackie would go to church with a devout aunt. This was an uncomfortable experience for her growing up as she was aware that Jesus had died for a sin she was starting to indulge in. She compared her struggle with homosexuality as akin to Eve's desire for the fruit:

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

She explained that we often have desire, affection and lust for things God has told us we should not have. We crave the created things more than the Creator. At that time the devil made more sense than God to her. He appealed to her flesh as opposed to asking her to deny a part of her she didn't know how to.

One night the Holy Spirit convicted her that the woman she was with would be the death of her. The thought disrupted everything else and when she checked her life she saw she was holistically sinful. It was not just her lesbianism. She needed God! She spoke to God and told Him, "But I don't want to be straight!" However, she understood that God wanted her to follow Him first, then everything else would be worked out.

So she had to make a decision. Should she give up everything that gave her comfort and unfollow the life she had been living to follow Jesus? In the end, she didn't choose Jesus because she was afraid of hell, or wanted to be straight. She chose Him because the Holy Spirit opened her eyes to see that He was better than everything else on this entire earth. She is now married to a Godly man, is the mother of 2 children with one on the way, and denies herself daily as she follows Christ.

On this Testimony Tuesday I want to remind us, that though it may be difficult to unfollow the world, our flesh and the devil's temptations, God is better than anything we are called to give up.

1 Corinthians 6:9‭-‬11

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
