COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

Minister with your gifts.

Did you ever hear the one about the dog and the bone? Well, long story short, he had a nice juicy bone from the butcher and lost it in a battle with comparison. He looked down at his reflection in the river and in a covetous rage, went after the bigger bone (or so he thought) in the water.

Sounds a bit silly, doesn’t it? Well, let’s replace ourselves with the dog, and swap the bone with for our gifts/talents. Oh and the water, well, that’s our phone. Now, what sometimes happens when we stare at the reflection/perception of what others have when we visit digital spaces and places? Ouch!

Exodus 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.”

US President Theodore Roosevelt is quoted as saying ”Comparison is the thief of joy.” Our joy (inner contentment) in what our Father has gifted us with to fulfill our PURPOSE, is stolen when we discount His gifts in a vain strife to be more like others.

Our focus should be on leading diligently and ministering to others with our God-given gifts/talents. There is a PURPOSE out there that is perfectly sized for the skills and anointing that reside within us. If we continue to hone and develop our gifts with God’s leadership, when we lay them at the altar, He will be faithful to do in us exactly what He promised. However, if we allow ourselves to be continually defeated by comparison and the made up battles with others, then everyone loses. You rob yourself of the fulfilment that comes with leading, serving and ministering and others lose the opportunity to be blessed by your bespoke gift/talent.

Praise Jesus for the band that plays a tune to ready christian soldiers to march onward into a victorious war!

Colossians 3:23-25 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favouritism.
